A Stair Climbing Wheelchair

I was part of the Queen Mary Cybathlon Team to build a wheelchair which could navigate an all-terrain obstacle course (including climbing stairs) for the Cybathlon 2020 competition at ETH Zürich. We purchased a powered wheelchair and upgraded its physical capabilities.

I lead a sub-team developing control systems. My role also involved the development of system architecture and control algorithms. I wrote python programs for a Raspberry Pi to integrate linear actuators, motors and sensors for the stair climbing mechanism of the wheelchair. My role has also included producing CAD drawings of the mechatronics for the stair climbing mechanism.

Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the Cybathlon 2020 competition could not go ahead as planned. There will be another in 2024.
